The Neutral doesn’t refer to neutrality or indifference, it is an ardent, burning activity”.

The title ‘Neutral’ is inspired by the lecture course on figures of the neutral by the French cultural critic Roland Barthes (1915-1980). Neutral Magazine is at the heart of the Media and Film programme at York St. John. The publication is committed to all things Media, Film and Culture. Neutral is founded upon six core content categories Film Reviews, Media and Technology, Fiction, Issues and Debates, Culture and Society and Arts. Neutral is a wonderfully diverse publication, aiming to always “outplay the paradigm”.

Our magazine is committed to getting in amongst not just the debates of media and culture, but in-between the spaces of debates, to locate what makes them arise and what new possibilities are on the horizon. The contents of this magazine, and all subsequent editions are to be viewed as being far from neutral or bland, rather baffling, ardent and resourceful.

EDITORS NOTE

This year has been a brilliantly collaborative and communicative process between myself, Martin Hall, Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Studies, United by Design and most importantly an incredibly passionate and talented team of students. From working on Neutral as a student to working in an editorial position, I am incredibly proud to have been involved with the publication. Neutral is a project that defines originality, reinvention and collaboration; a unique publication, which holds tremendous amounts of value in sustaining the importance of creatively in higher education. Neutral encourages students and graduates to gain invaluable creative experience, and for that, I am immensely grateful.

Neutral Magazine has undergone a significant redesign over the last five months, all inspired by the wonderful minds of York St. John’s talented Media and Film students. The Neutral team had the vision to make 2018 the most successful yet; part of that success was reaching new audiences with our content. You can continue to support Neutral in reaching new horizons, by reading our magazine, sharing and debating its content with others!

York st john

Neutral’s content is derived from the talented film and media students at York St John University. The Film and Media programmes at York St John provide students with the opportunity to critically engage with cinema and a range of cultural media forms and debates. The programme covers a broad range of topics as students study the fascinating cultural exchange between communicative forms.
